Bangladesh Protests Over Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Remarks

Bangladesh on Thursday lodged a protest with India’s temporary High Commissioner over remarks made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs described as “false and fabricated.” Hasina, in a recent speech aimed at her supporters, was criticized by the Bangladesh government for making comments deemed as “hostile actions” against the country. Dhaka has urged the Indian government to take appropriate action over this issue. The Bangladesh Ministry also stated that such statements, which hurt the sentiments of the Bangladeshi people, are not conducive to healthy bilateral relations.

Following Hasina's speech on Wednesday night, protests erupted across Bangladesh. In her speech, Hasina called on people to oppose the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. The 77-year-old former leader had been ousted from office in August 2023 after large student-led protests, and she had visited India shortly afterward. Following Hasina's remarks, protesters in Dhaka damaged her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence and set it on fire. Additionally, there were violent incidents targeting Awami League leaders in several regions of the country.
